“It is not a question of if, but when.” – Christopher Reeve (Superman) Once, the great scientist Stephen Hawking said, “If I had to choose a superhero to be, I would pick Superman. He’s everything that I’m not.” Who else can forget the tall man of the film industry, Christopher Reeve who portrayed the role of the great superhero Superman in the four editions of Superman movies? Who had imagined that he would be limiting his acting career as a superhero in Superman movies only due to just one incident? Popularly known as Superman, Christopher Reeve was an American actor, writer and director who became quadriplegic, a serious paralysis in four limbs and broke his vertebrae after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition in Virginia and the rest are known by all.
Winner of BAFTA award for DC comic book superhero Superman, Christopher Reeve got paralyzed for his entire life. After the serious accident, Christopher Reeve used a wheelchair and he required a portable ventilator to breathe for the rest of his life. Born on September 25, 1952, in New York City, he performed various stage and television roles before appearing in the blockbuster Superman series. Often bullied as a ‘Skinny Wasp’, Christopher Reeve delineated his flabbergasting acting skills in movies like ‘The Bostonians’, ‘Street Smart’ and ‘The Remains of the Day’. When Reeve regained consciousness after the fall, his heart was shattered knowing that he would be left paralyzed for his entire life. Suicidal thoughts orbiting Reeve, he attempted suicide but with the intense support and love of his family, he initiated a foundation to help other paraplegics. With the active involvement in the various campaigns supporting the handicapped children and paraplegics, Christopher Reeve founded Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation in 1998 with a strong mission to promote research into spinal cord injuries, attesting before a Senate subcommittee in favor of federal funding for stem cell research.
With the perfervid support of family and the followers, Christopher Reeve resumed his acting career, including a television production of ‘Rear Window’ backing with the wheelchair aside. The direction of two television films with health themes, ‘In the Gloaming’ and ‘The Brooke Ellison Story’, he established himself as a most proficient director. An autobiography about Reeve’s filmy experiences and the aftereffects of his accident ‘Still Me’, appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list for eleven weeks for which Reeve won a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. Sadly, the great superhero took his last breath on October 10, 2004, which left every Superman fans in the ocean of grief.
The swaggering and stouthearted Superman is the real inspiration for the people losing their hopes of living due to many unexpected incidents. Christopher Reeve once said, “Once you choose hope, anything’s possible.”
