Chaukune rural municipality is located in the western side of Surkhet district. It comprises of lagam, betan, bijaura, gutu and ghatgaun village development committee which is now divided into 10 wards. The municipality is believed to be named as Chaukune as it is situated in hill having its edges in four sides. It covers an area of 381.03 square kilometer with its main hub located in Gutu village development committee in ward six. The municipality consists of people with different ethnic groups mainly brahmin, chhetri, magar, dalit, rajis.
