Are societal barriers putting the kibosh on women to share about their mental health?

Along with the maintenance of sound physical health, it is pellucid that there is a great significance of maintaining sober mental health as if one is mentally sound and healthy, he/she can keep up better health physically too.

Mental health is a commonly canvassed discussion topic at present that has triumphed over the stigmas and doctrines over the past years. There used to be a kind of fear of people that if they shared about their mental health, society may consider them as absurd and non-acceptable in the society. But now, the world has swiveled the entrenched smudges and lapped up the topics of mental health.

But still, people are hysterical about expressing their mental health. The reports published by various organizations working for mental health have cited that women are more prone to health issues than men. And women are more likely to torment themselves through self-harm whereas men presumably let out their feelings through disruptive or antisocial behavior. But women are struck in themselves to express their mental situations amongst others.

Let’s talk and share about women's mental health because only one can live happily with a sound mental health condition.

It has never been a matter of importance about shading lights on mental health as it was considered to be taboo and regarding women's mental health issues, women are silently combatting their mental health issues. According to the research conducted by the mental health associations, it has been shown that 1 in 4 women experience depression compared to 1 in 10 men. Mental illness is indeed associated with a significant burden of morbidity and disability. It is a great load for any woman to face such challenges. There are even greater rates of suicidal cases and self-harm issues for women in minor ethnic communities. In spite of discussing their mental issues, they fear that there are no other options rather than experiencing emotional issues.

Women become the victims of anxiety, depression, and many other serious health problems due to many social and psychological factors. Several social and economic factors put women at greater risk of poor mental health than men. The gender discrimination prevailing as in patriarchal society and nauseating women as lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and other sexualities have been one of the major reasons for the women suffering from mental health issues.

Women are apt to do household chores taking care of children and older people whereas most of the housewives are living under social isolation meaning only sitting at homes without any options of social interactions to free themselves from loneliness. Women can express their feelings with stronger social networks and the interactions may enhance their mental health but if they do more correlative discussions with others.

One of the ultimate truths is women still can’t identify that they are facing serious mental health issues. There are many factors and times when women face such issues and now it’s time to speak and share about this because mental health problems are a big problem and the remedy should be fixed as early as possible.

Poverty, isolation, and hormonal changes are some of the major factors for women suffering from mental health issues whereas sexual assault, discrimination, lack of freedom, trauma, and abuse are the major causes to embrace mental suffering. There are certain times when women have to suffer from tremendous health issues. Let’s know more about mental health issues and the time phases when women had to suffer from mental health issues:

  • Women may experience post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) and eating disorders at higher rates than men.

  • About 1 in 10 women are affected with depression and anxiety during the time of pregnancy(antenatal depression) and the year following the birth of the baby(postnatal depression).

  • Women can face physical and emotional stresses during major life transitions such as pregnancy, motherhood, and the times of menopause.

  • When women face relationship breakdowns such as divorce, it can bring financial losses, social security issues, and many more which brings emotional traumas in women.

  • When women face changes in hormonal levels, it can result in a wide range of physical challenges such as hot flushes, night sweats, interrupted sleep patterns, weight gains, etc which may result in stressful situations for women.

Similarly, workloads, household and personal problems, managing competing paid and unpaid work demands, body shaming, cyberbullying, etc can also give emotional and psychological burdens to women. As women have a longer life expectancy than men, it is obvious that women have to suffer from more mental challenges than men in old age.

But with the acceptance of the need for awareness of mental health, many such organizations are established for the help of people suffering from mental health issues. Many psychologists and mental health experts are there to offer help. And therapies are never the ways of feeling ashamed of. Psychologist and Auschwitz survivor have mentioned in her memoir, The Choice: Embrace the Possible “There is no hierarchy of suffering.” One’s brain can undergo several stresses along with heart breakdowns. Physical pain or emotional pain or mental pain hurts a lot affecting ourselves, our surroundings, and the people we love and care for.

These are some of the things that can be applied for good mental health:

  1. Talk and share your feelings

  2. Keep yourself active. Don’t isolate yourself for a long time.

  3. Eat well

  4. Drink water timely and sensibly

  5. Keep in touch with your loved ones

  6. Ask for HELP

  7. Sometimes take a break

  8. Do something you are good at

  9. Accept for who you are

  10. Care for yourselves and your loved ones and others

Let’s break the taboo and silence regarding women’s mental health. Both working and non-working women are suffering from mental health issues. But the change has arrived. There is no need to hide the pain and abuse. Because there is always a help knocking at your door saying “Are you okay?” Women have to open up and express themselves.

Let’s break the chain of conservative dogmas and uncloak about women’s mental health. No one can know what exactly a mental illness looks like but slowly it starts killing you.

Stay positive and share about mental health. Good mental health means a better life and better care of yourself and those you care for.
